The Opera and Ballet House, Kuybishev square, Drama Theatre The Kuybishev square was planed on the general plan of the city in 1853. It occupies the territory of 575x325 m. The scale of the square was chosen because of the fact that the temple had to be situated here. The place of the future temple was elucidate on 7 April in 1866 (the date of Emperor Alexander's II birthday). In May 1869 the temple by the architect E. Zhiber was founded. The capacity of the temple was 2500 people. Only in 1892 the ornamentation of the low part of St. Alexey Temple was finished. The author was A. Shcherbachev. The temple was finished on 30 August in 1894. There were 4 public gardens around the temple named after the throne heir Nickolay. The temple was built in Byzantine style. The first architect K. Ton, who created the project of Jezes Christ temple in Moscow, took part in this project either. Ton's building style influenced on Zhiber's project because he was his disciple. In 1935 Sobornaya square was renamed to Kuybyshev Square, and in three years the monument to V.V. Kuybyshev was placed here. The temple was destroyed, and the Opera and Ballet House by the architect N. Trotskiy was built on its place. It occupies the territory of 100 000 m?. There is a library, a museum and an auditorium for 1250 people. During the World War II the Bolshoi Theatre staged its performances here. On 5 March 1942 "The Seventh symphony" of Shostokovich was played in the foyer of the theatre. The Chapaev square is situated at the end of Kuybyshev Street. This little square is a witness of the architecture development of Russian style, modern style, constructivism, post-modernism in XIX - XX centuries. In 1932 the multi-figural monument to Chapaev was placed in the Chapaeva square. Its hight is 10 m, and it occupies the territory of 17 x 22 m. The author of this sculpture is M. Manizer. There is o copy of this monument in St-Petersburg, placed in 1933 in front of the Academy named after M. Budyonyi. The project of the Drama Theatre was ordered in 1886 to Moscow architect M. Chichagov, who was Russian style supporter. This building is made of red bricks with white details. There is an auditorium for 1123 people here. The theatre was finished in 1888. As you can notice the building is made in two different styles. The plan and the front of the theatre are symmetric. That is the classicism sign. On the other hand the details of the building characterize Moscow medieval architecture style. The rebuilding of the theatre was accomplished in 1965. The Chapaev square is a "corner" of our city. The theatrical atmosphere is emphasized by the 2-storeyed wooden house with 2 turrets by the architect Shcherbychov A. In the neighborhood there is a famous and supersecret Stalin's Bunker.
